About Susi

Susann Brox Nilsen is a selftaught artist based in Tromsø, Norway. Also goes by the name Susi the weird and wonderful.

Her words:
"I love to hunt for treasures in flea markets, secondhand shops and old houses! I pick up inspiration from so many things: oddities & curiosities such as steampunk, circus life (especially freakshows! Remember Sideshow Bob from The Simpson? Such a golden character!), cartoons and strange movies.

As a child I had a very lively imagination, and drawing was my favorite thing to do. I was always more drawn to the spooky and surreal, which is ironic, because I'm scared of the dark.
When I was a teenager my mom bought me a typewriter, and I became obsessed with writing stories. It was mainly lively, imaginative novels with lots of illustrations. I've kept them all and they're hilarious to read.

I've always preferred to work on many projects at the same time, so I paint and sew 50/50.
Painting: Oil paint was my number one medium for over 10 years. In 2019 I started to experiment with mixed media, and I absolutely loved it! Typical features in my art: Anthropomorphisme, strange proportions (such as 2 different eyes or a massive head) and explosive colors. I also sneak in lots of metaphors. I think it gives the painting opportunety to have a deeper meaning, without revealing too much.

Fabric:
There's a clear red thread between my canvas and fiber creatures!
My sewing journey started when I was patching up my son’s worn out teddybear. The materials I had available was all in different colors and texture, so it ended up as a fun scrap project. I completely fell in love with the imperfect style! My dolls are definitely a mix of creepy-cute, which I think is the perfect combo! I feel that my dolls are more than just a fun apprearance. They symbolize the beauty of being different".
